It has long been rumoured, but today the BBC confirmed that Russel T Davies is to step down as lead writer and executive producer of Doctor Who.
RTD has often been cited as the reason why the new Doctor Who has been such a success since the show’s return in 2005.
Steven Moffat, already known to Who fans, will take over the roles for the fifth series in 2010. Moffat, whose pre-Who writing credits include Press Gang, Coupling and Jekyll, is responsible for some of the most original and terrifying stories over the past four series.
He penned series one’s “The Empty Child” which left the haunting “Are you my mummy?” phrase ringing in our ears. He created the clockwork soldiers in “The Girl in the Fireplace” in series two, and recently won a BAFTA for his script for “Blink” with the moving stone angels. The upcoming two-parter, “Silence in the Library” is also his work.
I don’t know if Moffat will be taking over RTD’s Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures roles. I’m hoping he does; the second series of Torchwood was a great improvement on the first, and under his guidance the series could take a whole new direction.
Steven Moffat says
“My entire career has been a Secret Plan to get this job. I applied before but I got knocked back ‘cos the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven.
“Anyway, I’m glad the BBC has finally seen the light, and it’s a huge honour to be following Russell into the best - and the toughest - job in television. I say toughest ‘cos Russell’s at my window right now, pointing and laughing.”
And Russel’s reaction…
“It’s been a delight and an honour working with Steven, and I can’t wait to see where his extraordinary imagination takes the Doctor. Best of all, I get to be a viewer again, watching on a Saturday night!”
