Red Dwarf Is Coming Back!

Red DwarfImage via Wikipedia

Now, if you were a teenager in the nineties, lived in the UK and had even slight geek tendencies, then there is a strong chance that at some point you were a fan of the long-running sci-fi sitcom, Red Dwarf.  So there’s a good chance that a lot of people out there are getting excited at the prospect of their return to television!  If you have no idea what Red Dwarf is, its the story of the last Earthling alive (Dave Lister) and his unusual companions while they travel through deep space trying to get back to Earth.  For more information, check out the Red Dwarf wikipedia page.

Digital Spy reports today that the full crew of Lister (Craig Charles), Rimmer (Chris Barrie), Kryten (Robert Llewellyn), Cat (Danny John-Jules) and even Kristine Kochanski (Chloe Annett) will be returning to film four 30-minute specials for digital channel Dave, featuring new material and classic clips.

Now, the old/new mix kind of dissappoints me a bit, as does the idea of four specials rather than a full blown series, but I’m hoping that the use of existing RD footage will be sparse and actually fit in with a decent plot, rather than a veiled attempt at one of those “Greatest Hits” shows that US sitcoms like so much (Friends seemed to have a lot of these).

No news as to whether Doug Naylor or Rob Grant will be involved, but it would be great to see these two reunited for the writing after their decision to go their seperate ways several years ago.  Also there is no mention of Holly, either the male or female incarnation, but they have to bring he/she back.

Red Dwarf originally ran for 8 series before the BBC canned it, and last year Naylor reported that the BBC have declined a ninth series, even though it was commerically successful.  There have also been several attempt to produce a Red Dwarf film, but it has never materialised for a number of reasons.

I was going to include a clip here, but the BBC have disallowed embedding of their YouTube videos, so here is the link instead. Smegheads.
