Red Dwarf Is Coming Back!

Red DwarfImage via Wikipedia

Now, if you were a teenager in the nineties, lived in the UK and had even slight geek tendencies, then there is a strong chance that at some point you were a fan of the long-running sci-fi sitcom, Red Dwarf.  So there’s a good chance that a lot of people out there are getting excited at the prospect of their return to television!  If you have no idea what Red Dwarf is, its the story of the last Earthling alive (Dave Lister) and his unusual companions while they travel through deep space trying to get back to Earth.  For more information, check out the Red Dwarf wikipedia page.

Digital Spy reports today that the full crew of Lister (Craig Charles), Rimmer (Chris Barrie), Kryten (Robert Llewellyn), Cat (Danny John-Jules) and even Kristine Kochanski (Chloe Annett) will be returning to film four 30-minute specials for digital channel Dave, featuring new material and classic clips.

Now, the old/new mix kind of dissappoints me a bit, as does the idea of four specials rather than a full blown series, but I’m hoping that the use of existing RD footage will be sparse and actually fit in with a decent plot, rather than a veiled attempt at one of those “Greatest Hits” shows that US sitcoms like so much (Friends seemed to have a lot of these).

No news as to whether Doug Naylor or Rob Grant will be involved, but it would be great to see these two reunited for the writing after their decision to go their seperate ways several years ago.  Also there is no mention of Holly, either the male or female incarnation, but they have to bring he/she back.

Red Dwarf originally ran for 8 series before the BBC canned it, and last year Naylor reported that the BBC have declined a ninth series, even though it was commerically successful.  There have also been several attempt to produce a Red Dwarf film, but it has never materialised for a number of reasons.

I was going to include a clip here, but the BBC have disallowed embedding of their YouTube videos, so here is the link instead. Smegheads.

Adventures With A Wii - When It’s Broken!

I think the Nintendo Wii is fantastic. I’ve had it for 4 months now and I still think its a great machine. The unique control system is still fun to use and has certainly proved to be more than just a gimmick. However, there is one major problem with its design.

I have a two year-old son.  As wonderful as he is, he naturally has the in-built curiosity of a toddler and this can sometimes lead to mischief.  Which is how two plastic coins became stuck in the Wii disk slot, preventing the console from accepting either Wii or Gamecube disks.  The Wii still functioned perfectly in every other way - I could browse the web, look at photos, change my Mii, etc. but I just could not play games.  This could have been easily prevented if there was some way of locking the disk slot, either internally or externally.

Some people might argue that I brought it upon myself by having it at his level, next to the television, where he can reach it.  In my defence, he has never done anything like this before, and there are other appliances within his grasp and they are all working fine (well ok, one DVD player has seen better days, but I’m putting it down to wear and tear and overuse).  Plus the Wii looks its best stood up, and looks even funkier when the base I have is turned on and it shines with all of its blue-LED goodness!

Russel T Davies Steps Down; Steven Moffat Steps Up

Russel T DaviesIt has long been rumoured, but today the BBC confirmed that Russel T Davies is to step down as lead writer and executive producer of Doctor Who.

RTD has often been cited as the reason why the new Doctor Who has been such a success since the show’s return in 2005.

Steven Moffat, already known to Who fans, will take over the roles for the fifth series in 2010.  Moffat, whose pre-Who writing credits include Press Gang, Coupling and Jekyll, is responsible for some of the most original and terrifying stories over the past four series.
