Robotics technology seems to have gained a boost in the last few years. I recall seeing a number of robot-focussed new reports recently (from the robot nose to the creation of a robot village). Today the BBC reported that they’ve made a new military robot, designed to go out in the field to retrieve wounded soldiers where it is too dangerous for field medics to venture. Once they are back to safety the can be tended to. They have caterpillar tracks for rough terrain, and on smoother surfaces they sprout legs so they can walk! And to put the poor wounded soldier, who is just about to take a ride on this machine, at ease, they’ve given it a “head” that looks like a teddy bear. And I suppose this has nothing to do with the handy acronym its been given - BEAR (Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot!) What next? Will it sing lullabys as it avoids bullets? Maybe a couple of bedtimes stories?
As a side note, Michael Bay’s promising big-screen Transformers outing is out soon. Watch the buzz around robots then. It happened in 2004 for I Robot.
