Play Nearly 2,000 NES Games From Within Firefox

Old-school NES games eh?  There were some classics - Super Mario Bros 3, Castlevania, Legend of Zelda, Contra - the list goes on.  I know there are a couple of websites that allow you to play some games on their site.  And there are also a few emulators you can download to do the same thing, but then you’ve got the hassle of finding the ROMs.  What if there was an easier way to play any of almost 2,000 NES games from within Firefox?

FireNES is a new plugin that does just that.  Visit the website and click on the Instalar FireNES link to start the installation.  You may also need the Java plugin, but fortunately there is a handy link on the site for that too.

FireNES - Play NES games from within Firefox

Once the plugin in is installed and you’ve restarted Firefox, a new option will appear in the Tools menu for FireNES.  Clicking on this will open the FireNES sidebar and will present a tabbed list of games.  The main tab lists all of the games and the second lists the most popular ones.  FireNES lets you build up a favourites list by right clicking on a game and selecting “Add to Favourites”, and the third tab lists these.  Double clicking on a game in any list launches that game in a seperate window.

The games seem to perform well (as you’d expect 8-bit games to do on a modern system).  There seems to be no graphical, sound or control issues, and the speed seems to be spot on.  The choice of games is incredible.  I don’t know if this list is growing - there is no total game count available.  Maybe this will be fixed in future updates to the plugin.

Maybe this isn’t exactly breaking new ground with emulation, but I’ve never seen a plugin like this.  I’m hoping this will expand to cover other 8- and 16-bit systems (I’d love to be able to play some of the old Commodore Amiga games this easily).

    ohh, Thank you soo much.!

Doesn’t work for me. The only control that has any effect is “start” (enter). Nothing else does anything and the website is in Spanish so that isn’t any help at all.

I like this plugin, but one problem I’ve found. I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan, but unfortunately, you can’t seem to save progress in the game, unless I’m missing something :(

Sorry to hear you’re having problems xsjado - it worked fine for me. Maybe other plugins are clashing with it?

Aariana, I’m afraid I can’t find that function either - maybe its something the author could add in the next update (as well as making his site available in English?)

Legend of Zelda Octorok Hunter - Made this mettlesome in a some days, ease employed on it :) The neutral is to blackball every adversary as alacritous as possible
