Nintendo Wii and Virtual Reality Headsets

Nintendo Wii and Virtual Reality HeadsetsImagine being able to use the Nintendo Wii to navigate around 3D landscapes without wearing those huge, cumbersome headsets that looked like oversize cycle helmets.  Imagine being able to play Super Mario Galaxy and the screen panning around as you move your head.  Well, it could soon be a reality!

The amazing Johnny Lee has once again found a unique way to use the Wii control system.  By using a stationary Wiimote, and converting the sensor bar into a head-mounted tracking device, Lee has created a virtual reality system that could actually be workable.

In his first demo he shows a series of targets coming out of the screen.  As he moves the camera left and right, the targets move accordingly, allowing us to see behind them.  As he moves towards the screen the targets get bigger and eventually disappear behind us.

In the next demo he puts up an image of a stadium, and shows that by moving left we can see more of the seats; by moving right we can see more of the field.  As he approaches the screen more of the images comes into view, just like a real window.

In his final demo he shows that, just by using a second Wiimote, games can be created.  The targets come back but this time Lee can shoot them while moving around in a 3D space.

I really hope Nintendo and game developers take note of this.  This could really add something to games, especially FPS games, and also frees up the controller for extra functions.
