Adventures With A Wii - Make Your Wiimote Extra Sensitive

This week sees the return of the annual gaming-fest that is E3 (or the Electronic Entertainment Expo).  Here the 3 behemoths of console gaming - Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft - show off their latest hardware and software and generally try to outdo each other, both at the show and in the masses of press that follows.  So expect a few E3 themed posts on here.  Speaking of which…

The first bit of info that has caught my eye is an add-on for the Wiimote that makes it motion sensitive!!! Um, yeah, I know it is already, but this makes it really sensitive.

Wii MotionPlus

Dubbed the Wii MotionPlus, it takes the form of a tiny little box that plugs into the bottom of the Wiimote (and it looks like it replicates the port on the bottom so that the Nunchuk and other peripherals can be plugged in too) and enhances the motion detection capabilities of the Wii by some degree.  In Nintendo’s own words:

The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion.

Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play.

Sounds interesting.  I expect that a lot of games won’t need this kind of granular control, but it could enhance other games immensely, especially sporting and simulation titles where this kind of accuracy matters.  More details will be announced at E3, and I’ll update this post as more info is released.
