I upgraded Wordpress to the latest version (2.6) last week. The upgrade itself went very smoothly, until I went to upgrade my plugins. There was an incompatability in the K2 theme that the site is based on which means that the custom sidebar manager is turned off everytime I went to the plugins page! After trawling through the K2 page and forums, I have now fixed it.
For others still struggling with this problem, you need to download the latest nightly build (build number 703 or later) of the K2 theme, and upload it to your Wordpress themes folder, overwriting the old version of K2 (backup your original theme file first though). Then you will need to copy the “k2-disable-widgets.php” file to your wordpress plugins folder and activate it in your Wordpress interface. Go back to the Design page and make sure the Sidebar Manager it still active and you should be ok.
I kept flicking between the Plugins and Design pages a few times, and then checked the live site, to make sure it was working ok. The problem seems to be sorted now, but it might be worth checking the K2 Nightly Changelog regularly to see if there have been any more issues.

Wow, its been a busy 24 hours. After posting my story about the FireNES plugin, it got picked up by StumbleUpon and sent around 16,000 visitors my way! Great traffic, but unfortunately it caused the server hosting my site to fall over under the demand. In total, ryanajarrett.com was down for about 2½ hours. The levels of traffic dropped right down during the outage and although I’m getting some interest in the post, most Stumble traffic has died.
To counter this I’ve now installed the WP Super Cache plugin to ease the workload on the server and therefore it should stand up should the same thing happen again.
I seem to have doubled my RSS subscribers in the process, so “Hello” to all of you that have just added me to your feed reader or signed up for the email.

You may have noticed a new addition to the site in the bottom-right corner. That’s because ryanajarrett.com is taking part in Orange’s Internet Balloon Race. This interesting event, billed as the world’s first ever balloon race across the Internet, starts at 9am on Monday 23rd June. Anyone can take part - just visit the site, register your details, choose your baloon (shaped as one of Orange’s four contract options - a Dolphin, a Camel, a Canary or a Racoon) and wait for the starting pistol to fire. You have seven days to travel across as many websites as possible.
