The Best Toys In The Last 10 Years

Christmas 2007 is almost here.  Stores are packed with harassed shoppers, overworked staff and , so I thought I would continue with this theme and list the best selling toys of the past 10 years as determined by the British Association of Toy Retailers (BATR).

1997 - The Year of the Teletubby

TeletubbiesThe Teletubbies marked a revolution in pre-school television.  Anyone who was around and the time will remember the incredible launch of the Teletubbies toy range, and how near on impossible it was to get one.   So it was no surprise that it became the BATR Toy of the Year in 1997.  I remember being in Hamleys in London and people were grabbing as many as they could of them off of the shelves as soon as new stock was put out.  I did actually manage to obtain 2 Teletubbies that year: total cost = £45.  10 years later, what do I see but Teletubbies in Woolworths for £7.50 a piece!

Terminator 4, 5 and 6 - Jumping The Shark or Leaping Ahead?

I have just read the news that Warner Bros now have the rights to the Terminator series. They are planning not only a third sequel, but also Terminator 5 and 6 as well!!! Slightly more worrying is the idea that Vin Diesel will be cast in the lead role (as the Terminator?) I know that Arnie is getting a little old and is busy sorting out Dubya nowadays, but I’m not sure Vin Diesel is the guy for the job.

Terminator 4, 5 and 6 - Jumping The Shark or Leaping Ahead?Another thing that is slightly confusing - these new films are to be a “re-invention” of the franchise. As Empire points out “James Cameron’s films were incredible and, aside from a couple of dated effects shots, look just as good today.” Maybe the re-invention will come from allowing more humanoid robots, as the shots of the robo-human war from the original Terminator films showed most of the ‘bots looking like metal skeletons rather than the Muscles from Brussels. More humans means more actors, which means (possibly) more names and more bums on seats. Cynical? Maybe, but I thought this series was finished already. I think the hunger for robots after Transformers is there, and certainly CGI is more than capable, so a fully metallic army would be much more impressive.

Teddy Bears Go To War!

Is This Robot Scary?Robotics technology seems to have gained a boost in the last few years.  I recall seeing a number of robot-focussed new reports recently (from the robot nose to the creation of a robot village).  Today the BBC reported that they’ve made a new military robot, designed to go out in the field to retrieve wounded soldiers where it is too dangerous for field medics to venture.  Once they are back to safety the can be tended to.  They have caterpillar tracks for rough terrain, and on smoother surfaces they sprout legs so they can walk!  And to put the poor wounded soldier, who is just about to take a ride on this machine, at ease, they’ve given it a “head” that looks like a teddy bear.  And I suppose this has nothing to do with the handy acronym its been given - BEAR (Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot!)  What next?  Will it sing lullabys as it avoids bullets?  Maybe a couple of bedtimes stories?

As a side note, Michael Bay’s promising big-screen Transformers outing is out soon.  Watch the buzz around robots then.  It happened in 2004 for I Robot.
