Google buys GrandCentral

GrandCentralTechcrunch reported a couple of days ago that Google are in the final phase of closing a deal to acquire GrandCentral. GrandCentral is an innovative startup that allows users to have a phone number “for life”, i.e. you can link your existing numbers to your GC number and route calls accordingly for different people. It also offers the ability to check phone messages online, store them (forever?), forward them, etc. which reminds me of Apple’s “Visual Voicemail”. You can even save whole phone conversations online if you wish.
I’m guessing, as many are, that Google want to incorporate GC’s technology in their Instant Messaging app, GTalk, and make it more fully featured and it may finally be able to compete against Yahoo! Messenger and Live Messenger. I can see transcripts of messages and conversations created automatically and be made available and searchable when logged in to iGoogle. For example, you want to find out when you last spoke to Dave about that great photo editing application because you can’t remember what its called, so you’d Google “Dave photo editing” and it would find all the conversations with Dave (any Dave in fact) about photo editing. From here you could flick through the transcript or listen to segments or even the whole conversation. You could then forward this on to Dave and ask him if he still uses this app, etc.

Now, if Google made this functionality free, would they then look at creating extra revenue streams from it. Google have started implementing AdSense on radio networks, and surely the same technology could be used on a phone system. Imaging calling Dave and being put through to his voicemail, but before you can leave a message you are played a short (5-6 seconds?) advert by Google. Because Google knows a bit about you and your recent conversations with Dave, it can tailor the ad to you, even to the point where it uses your name. I know that privacy is an issue, but it does the same sort of thing for email so why not voicemail?

Google Logo in Poor Taste

I noticed today that Google have changed their logo to coincide with Father’s Day.  Nothing particularly suprising there, they do it all the time.  This time they changed the second ‘O’ to a man in a rubber ring or dinghy, and they tail of the lower case ‘g’ changed to a small boy in a snorkel and mask.

Google's Father's Day Logo 2007

Normally this would have been fine, but I found this in rather poor taste seeing as earlier this week a 2-year-old boy was found floating in the sea, who later died later in hospital.  The body of his dad was found a couple of days later.  Before the infant was found a dinghy was found containing nappies and armbands.  I think Google should have withdrawn their logo this time and put up an alternative design.

My thoughts go out the the friends and relatives of the victims of this terrible tragedy.

Google Mashups

GoogleI’ve just received my invite to beta test Google’s Mashup editor. I haven’t had much chance to play with it yet, but it looks interesting. This may be in part a reaction to Yahoo! Pipes, but I suspect Google would have had something in the pipeline (excuse the pun) anyway. As Brady Forrest from oreilly.com says:

The editor accepts HTML, CSS, and Google-specific XML tags. These tags provide access to google feeds such as the Google Calendar and Base. The example we just saw built in front of us took six lines of code and plotted locations on a map. Pretty impressive. This can be hosted at googlemashups.com or you can make a gadget for iGoogle.

I’ll post on here my experience with it when I’ve had a go, and may even put a link of to one of my apps if I think its worth it!
