The Best Toys In The Last 10 Years

Christmas 2007 is almost here.  Stores are packed with harassed shoppers, overworked staff and , so I thought I would continue with this theme and list the best selling toys of the past 10 years as determined by the British Association of Toy Retailers (BATR).

1997 - The Year of the Teletubby

TeletubbiesThe Teletubbies marked a revolution in pre-school television.  Anyone who was around and the time will remember the incredible launch of the Teletubbies toy range, and how near on impossible it was to get one.   So it was no surprise that it became the BATR Toy of the Year in 1997.  I remember being in Hamleys in London and people were grabbing as many as they could of them off of the shelves as soon as new stock was put out.  I did actually manage to obtain 2 Teletubbies that year: total cost = £45.  10 years later, what do I see but Teletubbies in Woolworths for £7.50 a piece!

Yo! Capsule Hotel

YotelSimon Woodroffe, he of Yo!Sushi and Dragon’s Den fame, has launched a new hotel at Gatwick’s South Terminal. Based on the concept of Japan’s capsule hotels and designed by the guy responsible for British Airways’ First Class cabin, £25 will buy you a “standard” capsule for four hours (the minimum stay) in the Yotel. You get 7 square metres of space complete with single bed, bathroom, desk and a 20″ TV system, apparently the equivalent facilities as a 4-star hotel. If you want to splash out and go for a “premium” capsule, you’ll get 3 square metres more room plus a double bed and a 23″ inch flat screen.

Borat Story Has Legs!

It seems that the story I posted yesterday, about Martin, the lifeguard/Borat lookalike, who is being bullied at work, has legs.  Its made its way into a national!
