Pownce - An IM/Blog Hybrid?

Ryan Morrison just sent me an invitation to Pownce, a new web service that allows users to post messages, links, events and files, Twitter-style, to the Pownce site.  They also provide an application to run on your desktop that provides updated and allows you to submit to the site without visiting the site.

Now, I’m a bit confused over the purpose of the site.  It’s like a cross between a blog, an instant messaging app and the aforementioned Twitter.  But I use all of these already (although not so much Twitter - its kind of been usurped by the “status” in Facebook) and to be honest I’m happy with them.  The only possible benefit I can see is if I need to send multiple large files to a number of people.  But thats unlikely (and there are other ways of achieving it).

I like the Windows application.  Its fast and responsive and looks good.  It updates periodically (not sure how often - there’s no way to change it, or any settings come to that) and displays and messages from your friends that are public or meant for you.  You can also submit links, messages, events and files without having to visit the website, which is a good thing.  However, when I click on reply, it takes me to the website!!!  It’s only in 2nd Alpha stage so I’m sure it will be fixed, but I was surprised.

I’m hoping I’ve missed the point to Pownce.  It looks very good and it has created a buzz on the web.  It doesn’t help having hardly any friends on there (the problem with a limited beta) so its difficult to test it properly.  Also it had Kevin “Digg” Rose onboard so I’m sure it will shine!
